Originally called Ophir, the area was one of the first mining communities in Northern California. In 1855 a formal town plot map was laid out and the name was changed to Oroville. From 1848 to the 1930’s the immediate area’s financial development was primarily focused on gold. Later the focus was on lumber, agriculture and the development of power and recreation. Oroville has a fascinating history pictured in this publication featuring over 200 pictures of the town and the immediate area.
