Durham was established soon after the railroad came to California. In July 1870, the California and Oregon Railway tracks were completed to Chico. In Feb 1871, the post office was established at Durham. Durham has always been a farming community. By the start of the 20th century, the first almond trees were being planted in the area. The Durham Land Colony was started in 1918, dividing large land holdings into small parcels. Today Durham has a population of about 2,500.  This publication by Arcadia Publishing contains nearly 200 photographs of the area documenting the development and subsequent growth of the area.
