A Brief History of BCHS
Founded in 1956, the Butte County Historical Society was the brainchild of W.R Parker who would serve as the society’s first President. His father Ralzemond Parker was a druggist in Oroville in the 1860s and later a capitalist participating in the development of other businesses in town.
The Society existed for a number of years operating out of several locations until the early 1980s when they acquired the Ehmann Home, the Bangor Church and the Oregon City School. In 2000, the Society acquired the buildings for BCHS Museum and Archives.
In 2007, the Butte County Historical Society acquired a computerized collections management system to catalog our extensive collections. In 2020, the software was upgraded so the information is stored in the cloud and can be shared anywhere in the world.
2020 also saw BCHS revamp our webpage so we could begin to put more of the materials in our archives online. This combination of the upgraded software and the new webpage will work in tandem allowing us to develop our ability to reach history buffs and genealogists around the world.
